Flame Retardants

Flame Retardants

Synthetic magnesium hydroxide is used as a highly effective non-toxic inorganic flame retardant, filler and smoke suppressant additive. It is used for producing of practically all kinds of plastics and pigmented (co)polymer compounds based on PVC, PA, PS, PP, PE, PET, EVA, EPM etc. Selecting individual coating types is possible.

Flame-retardant effect of magnesium hydroxide is based on its endothermic decomposition to form magnesium oxide. This kind of decomposition is effective as heat-removal for cooling the polymer surface.

Magnesium hydroxide is decomposed at temperature 350°C with heat absorption 1.3 kJ/g. Only nontoxic and noncorrosive decomposition products are formed during this process.

Water vapor formed during decomposition acts as a protective gas. The heat protection layer (the char layer), containing magnesium oxide and carbonized polymer, remains on the polymer surface, thereby suppressing the further burning, and decreases the density of the smoke formed.

Synthetic magnesium hydroxide, as an effective halogen-free flame retardant and smoke suppressant, has the following characteristics and advantages:

  • chemicalpurity;
  • uniform particle structure;
  • adjustable particle-size distribution and specific surface;
  • high optical and color characteristics.

Using magnesium hydroxide in polymer compounds is characterized by the following:

  • toxicity and aggressivity of combustion products decrease;
  • frost resistance of polyolefin compounds increase;
  • production capacity of equipment increase;
  • it becomes possible to produce white compounds without additional colourants;
  • initial degradation point of the compound increases – up to 350 °C;
  • recycling possibility remains.
